The
Mable House website
The
Mable House Arts Center offers classes for children and adults
in the arts, both visual and performing, during the fall,
winter and spring quarters. In the summer, there are camps
for children from ages 4 to 16 in theatre and many differing
visual art mediums. The South Cobb Arts Alliance is the curator
of the state of the art gallery space, presenting seven different
exhibitions a year including the National Juried Exhibition.
There are also two outstanding exhibits of artwork by students
from schools in the area every year. The Mable House Arts
Center and the South Cobb Arts Alliance join together every
year to present the free Cnadlelight Concert Series at the
Mable House/Barnes Amphitheatre, as well as, Christmas House,
a sale of fine arts, crafts and edibles which are least 75%
handmade, which begins the first Friday in December and runs
for 10 days. Mable's Tea Room is available for lunch during
the Christmas House and, for the children, the Candy Cane
Hunt the first Saturday in December. For additional information,
please call 770-819-3285.
The
historic Mable House, ancestral home of the Mable family for
whom Mableton was named, is an example of a plantation plain
house constructed in 1843. It sits on the remaining 16 acres
of the original 400+ acre farm and includes a kitchen house,
corn crib, sweet potato house, storage barn, the family cemetery
and the original smokehouse and well. It was used as a hospital
during the Civil War and is on the National Register of Historic
Places. The house has been restored its original 1890's status
and has no running water. It is furnished with period furniture,
some original to the Mable family and has one room filled
with information about the family and the Mableton area. It
offers a wonderful opportunity to see life at a much slower
pace than today and is the home for the Friends of the Mable
House's yearly Storytelling Festival, which is held the first
Saturday of October. The house is open for tours, by appointment
only, guided by docents who are volunteers from the Friends
of the Mable House. Tours for groups of 8 and more or for
school classes should be arranged in advance by calling 770-819-3285.
